MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: PRO CIRCUIT’S SPECIAL RUN OF 1986 HONDA CR250 TWO-STROKE PIPES

This is a cool idea. ProCircuit plans to built a special limited-edition run of 1986 Honda CR250 Works Pipe and 304 silencers for bike builder and vintage racers. Just like back in the day, Pro Circuit’s Works Pipe increases horsepower and torque, while the unplated, oiled metal finish gives your bike that “works look.” Completing the special throwback kit is a 304 Factory Sound Silencer that has a slightly longer body to add top-end performance while reducing noise output. The brushed aluminum silencer body and stainless steel inlet tube and end-cap make the 1986 CR250 silencer look as good as it performs. It brings back memories of Ricky Johnson in his Team Honda days.

Pro Circuit will begin accepting orders for the $425.00 1986 Honda CR250 kit now and fulfill them when they reach the required production number. Order now if you want to be included in this special offer. For more info go to www.procircuit.com

SHOEI VFX-EVO HELMET
The public has waited a long time for a new Shoei helmet to replace the VFX-W. Now, Shoei has stepped into the modern helmet era with the VFX-EVO. It doesn’t look a whole lot different from the previous VFX, but hidden inside are a litany of safety features that bring the Shoei VFX-EVO up to date.
VERDICT: The VFX-EVO’s primary feature is its rotational energy mitigation system called M.E.D.S. It consists of an anchored center column that the dual-layer system moves from during a crash. Plus, it has a dual-density EPS liner that is softer at the helmet’s crown and firmer on the sides. It has the classic angular look of the original VFXW, and the comfort of the helmet is great. One gripe—it is louder than many other helmets.
DIGITS: $539.00 to $559.00 (solid colors), $719.00 to $739.00 (graphic designs)—www.shoei-helmets.com.

E-Z UP ENDEAVOR INSTANT SHELTER
The Endeavor model is only available in the 10×10-foot size (although E-Z Up offers sizes as large as 10×20 feet in other models). The Endeavor weighs 64 pounds, but thanks to its all-aluminum frame, it is lighter than most steel awnings by several pounds. E-Z Up offers eight standard colors (punch, limeade, black, royal blue, grey, orange, splash and white), plus 17 premium colors. E-Z Up’s art department can print logos and custom designs on any color canopy.
VERDICT: The E-Z Up Endeavor model is the beefed-up, rugged, he-man version of the instant-shade business—bigger, stronger and better.
DIGITS: $799.00 (10×10 feet), $105.00 (10-foot sidewall)—(800) 457-4233 or www.ezup.com.

AXO PENTAGON MORPHO CHEST PROTECTOR
The AXO Pentagon Morpho’s outer layer, front and rear, is composed of 3mm-thick plastic shells sewn to 6mm-thick Biofoam inner panels. Sandwiched between the plastic and the Biofoam is a 23mm layer of high-density foam on the back panel and a 14mm high-density layer behind the front panel. The total thickness is 30mm on the front panel and 40mm on the back panel. That is a lot of energy-absorbing material between your body and the ground.
VERDICT: Not just a roost guard, the Morpho can handle those painful body-slam style crashes that turn your torso purple.
DIGITS: $145.00—(800) 409-0903 or www.alpinestars.com.

MXA MOTO-CHALLENGE: CAN YOU NAME THIS RIDER?

This rider was most famous in Europe, but he raced with the AMA. What’s his name? Answer at the bottom of the page.

THE WAY WE WERE: THE WAY WE WORE

Jody Weisel, circa 1971.

Let’s start at the bottom and look at Jody’s ensemble. Those are three-stripe Full Bore boots. They had seven buckles. After 1971 they got a metal plate on the front and fancier striping. The pants are what were called “Chicken Leathers.” They were full-grain leather and featured quilting for protection—there were no plastic knee cups. The gloves are made from goat skin and have rubber strips across the knuckle and down each finger for protection. The jersey is 100% cotton and is covered by a Hallman GP chest protector. Hanging down by Jody’s neck are his Carrera goggles and Jofa. His open face helmet is equipped with a duckbill visor (which in the days before full-faced motocross helmets was all the protection your face got from roost—if you ducked your head fast enough). The then common 1970s long hair cascades out of the helmet onto his shoulders. Jody is leaning on a Hodaka Super Rat with a Webco head and fiberglass gas tank. In the background is a Yamaha RT-1 360 stripped of its enduro parts. And, that’s a classic 1968 Volkswagen with a camper Kombi interior waiting to give Jody a ride home.

THIS SATURDAY’S REM AT GLEN HELEN CANCELED—RESCHEDULED FOR JULY 21

REM’S Frank Thomason says: “In over 30 years of promoting our weekly Motocross program I have never had to cancel a race due to personal reasons. Unfortunately that run ends this weekend. The REM race scheduled for this Saturday July 14 is canceled. We will start our Summer series on July 21 and will have our 6D Helmet drawing the same day. We will extend the series one week to make up for the lost date. I apologize to everyone for the change and hope everyone has a great day without R.E.M. The R.E.M. track will be open and prepped for an “Un-Race” for REM racers who want to come out to Glen Helen.”

Answer: Trampas Parker score a third place podium at the 1985 San Diego 125 West Supercross, but he never scored another top ten in the USA. He moved Italy in 1987 and started impressing people with his strong rides. He also changed his name from the one on his AMA license, Chad Parker, to his given first name of Trampas—”because the Italians couldn’t say Chad, but they could pronounce Trampas.” Trampas won the 1989 125 World Champion and 1990 250 World Championship and to this day remains the least known American World Champion of all-time.
